Sound Design and Synthesis

Explore the creative possibilities of sound by mastering synthesis techniques and innovative sound design for film and games.

3 Credits • Term 1

The Sound Design & Synthesis module expands your creative palette beyond traditional orchestration. Modern media composers are often expected to create distinctive sonic worlds, not just write notes. This module teaches you how to design, shape, and manipulate sound as a core part of your compositional language.

You will explore synthesis, sampling, modulation, filtering, compression, distortion, time-based effects, granular and wavetable synthesis, percussion design, bass and sub management, textures, pads, sequences, arpeggios, field recording, and psychoacoustics. The emphasis is on turning sound design into storytelling: creating timbres and textures that carry emotion, atmosphere, tension, and identity.

By the end of the module, you will have a stronger command of electronic and hybrid sound creation. You will be able to build original sounds, integrate them with acoustic instruments, and develop a personal sonic signature that strengthens your work as a media composer.

In this module, you will:

  • Learn core principles of frequency, timbre, texture, dynamics, and perception
  • Create original sounds using synthesis, sampling, modulation, and processing
  • Design hybrid palettes that combine acoustic and electronic elements
  • Build professional patches, one-shots, textures, percussion, basses, and pads
  • Develop a personal sound design toolkit for cinematic scoring
