Major Project
The Major Project is the MFA’s capstone, where students create an original, professional‑quality score accompanied by a written commentary that demonstrates their creative, technical, and scholarly mastery of scoring for visual media.
12 Credits • Term 4
The Major Project serves as the capstone of the MFA and represents the culmination of the twelve‑month course of study. It typically takes the form of an original motion picture score, presented as a professional‑quality electronic or hybrid production, that demonstrates the student’s command of the key concepts and techniques covered throughout the program. Alongside this musical work, students will produce a 7,500‑word written commentary that contextualises their creative decisions, compositional approach, and technical processes within the field of scoring for visual media. While the emphasis is placed on the music itself, the commentary provides an opportunity to synthesise the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired over the year.
Students have the freedom to choose the creative focus of their final project, in consultation with the Academic Director and supervisor(s). They are expected to plan, schedule, and deliver an original work that integrates compositional skill, technical expertise, and an understanding of scoring for visual media. The written component, completed alongside the project in Semester 3, documents the compositional process, influences, and implementation while reflecting on audience and user experience. The final submission must meet Masters‑level academic standards and demonstrate the student’s ability to merge creative practice with scholarly insight.
