Studio Conducting

Build the confidence and technique to lead recording sessions and communicate effectively with orchestras and ensembles.

3 Credits • Term 3

The Studio Conducting module develops the practical podium skills needed to communicate your music clearly in a recording environment. The goal is not to train you as a classical concert conductor, but to give you the physical clarity, confidence, and control required to lead your own sessions and collaborate effectively with professional musicians.

You will work on core conducting fundamentals including beat patterns, cueing, gesture, dynamics, articulation, hand independence, tempo control, and ensemble coordination. The module is highly practical, with repeated opportunities to conduct, receive feedback, correct physical habits, and build confidence through direct experience.

The module leads directly into your own recording-session work. You will prepare a 2-piano reduction of your Recording Session 12 cue, rehearse it with two pianists, and then conduct your own music for a 31-piece ensemble in BNR Studio One. By the end, you will understand how to step onto the podium with preparation, authority, and musical clarity.

In this module, you will:

  • Develop clear beat patterns, cueing, gesture, and physical control
  • Communicate dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and musical intent from the podium
  • Rehearse and conduct a 2-piano reduction of your own music
  • Apply conducting technique in a professional recording session context
  • Build confidence leading musicians in the studio
