Recording, Mixing and Post-Production
Learn how to navigate the full studio process—from recording to final mix—while working in the Academy’s state-of-the-art mixing room alongside experienced engineers and faculty.
3 Credits • Terms 1-3
The Recording, Mixing and Post-Production module gives you the tools to take your music from the studio floor to a polished final mix. For a composer, understanding how music is recorded and mixed is a major professional advantage. It allows you to communicate more effectively with engineers, make better creative decisions before and during sessions, and deliver work that feels finished, clear, and professional.
You will learn the fundamentals of recording setup, microphone placement, Pro Tools session management, balance, EQ, reverb, dynamics, panning, and spatial treatment. The module combines studio-based learning, classroom work, group feedback, and one-on-one support, helping you understand both the technical and artistic sides of the post-production process.
Because every piece of music has different needs, the module emphasizes decision-making rather than formula. You will learn how to shape a mix so that it supports the emotional purpose of the cue, brings out the best in the recording, and meets professional delivery standards.
In this module, you will:
- Understand microphone types, placement strategies, and ensemble recording setups
- Build and manage Pro Tools sessions for recording and mixing
- Apply EQ, reverb, dynamics, panning, and spatial treatment effectively
- Create clear, balanced, professional stereo mixes
- Deliver final audio that meets industry formatting and loudness expectations
