DAW and MIDI Programming
Learn to efficiently translate your musical ideas into polished, realistic demos through advanced DAW workflows and MIDI programming.
3 Credits • Term 1
The DAW & MIDI Programming module gives you the technical foundation every modern screen composer needs: the ability to turn musical ideas into convincing, professional-quality mockups. In today’s industry, composers are often expected to present detailed demos before anything reaches the recording stage. This module helps you build the speed, confidence, and technical control to do exactly that.
You will develop fluency in your chosen DAW while learning how to make orchestral and hybrid mockups feel expressive, realistic, and emotionally persuasive. The focus is not simply on using software, but on using it musically: shaping performances, managing articulations, building convincing orchestral textures, balancing sample libraries, and integrating electronic elements in a way that supports your creative voice.
By the end of the module, you will be able to create demos that clearly communicate your music to directors, producers, performers, and collaborators. Whether preparing for a live recording session or pitching a cue for approval, you will gain the workflow skills needed to work efficiently under professional conditions.
In this module, you will:
- Develop advanced DAW workflows for orchestral and hybrid composition
- Program realistic MIDI performances using articulations, expression, dynamics, and automation
- Build polished mockups suitable for director approval and recording preparation
- Integrate electronic textures with orchestral writing
- Improve speed, organization, and technical confidence in professional media scoring workflows
